Now that the national election is over and the firmament of New York politics has been shaken, it’s time to focus on the problems ahead of us all. Of course we will have to see what happens in the remaining months of the Bush administration and what president-elect Obama says he wants to do starting in January.
However, we can’t wait for those answers. New York State and local governments are facing their biggest financial crisis in modern times. There’s not enough revenue to go around. The big question is whether there’s enough time to use a scalpal or whether an axe is the only instrument left at our disposal? Which way that goes will depend on the Legislature getting back to Albany with a new understanding that the old rules no longer apply.
